Discussing the Promise of Public Interest Technology

As governments and nonprofits around the world faced the dual crises of the COVID-19 epidemic and its economic fallout, many found themselves overwhelmed and unable to rapidly meet the needs of their citizens and members. Hana Schank and Tara McGuinness discuss their new book, Power to the Public: the Promise of Public Interest Technology, about how governments and nonprofits are using the power of digital technology, with approaches like data, design, and delivery, to become faster and more connected to those they serve.

Hana Schank was one of the early members of the US Digital Service and a founding member of the Public Interest Technology Program at New America. Tara McGuinness was part of the White House’s Healthcare.gov team and recently ran the domestic policy team for the Biden Transition.
