Meet PMAA: 2020 Survey Results

Advocacy, expand, leadership, diversity, service. These are the words that came up when PMAA asked you, “What would you most like to see PMAA accomplish in the next 3 to 5 years?”

Every year (ok, we’re on year 2), PMAA distributes a survey to our membership to better understand who PMF/PMI alumni are and how PMAA can better serve them. In the fall, PMAA sent our second annual survey to get to know you before the board’s annual retreat, where we used the results to develop PMAA’s new strategic plan. Based on the results, we are working to deliver more and better services to our members like new networking and training resources. We plan to build more collaborative partnerships so these services can reach a broader audience. Lastly, we’ll be looking internally to strengthen our organizational capacity. You can find more information about our strategic plan on our website.

But the survey didn’t just inform the strategic plan. It was also an opportunity to learn more about the PMF/PMI alums that make up PMAA’s network. Thanks to the 120 of you that responded, here’s a look at our membership.

  1. About 60 percent of respondents entered a PMF/PMI cohort within the past 10 years (see graph). You can help us expand our organization by sharing PMAA with PMIs specifically. Join PMAA by subscribing to our newsletter.

  2. No surprise, our membership is dedicated to public service. About three quarters of the survey respondents are still federal employees. Thirteen percent are veterans and about 5 percent have served in PeaceCorps or AmeriCorps. Not only are they dedicated public servants, but many of our members are also paving the way for future PMFs. Twenty percent of respondents are either first generation college students or first generation professionals.

  3. PMAA has some work to do to reflect the diversity of the public we serve. Only 22 percent of respondents are Persons of Color. PMAA is committed to diversity and equity in our membership services and increasing the proportion of PMFs who are Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Color. Read more about PMAA’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our Statement that Black Lives Matter and contact us with any ideas or to be directly involved in this work.

We want to continue to get to know our membership and find out how we can best serve you. If you’re interested in volunteering, sharing your story, or connecting with other alums, reach out.

We look forward to learning more about PMF/PMI alumni and meeting their needs over the next 2 years.
